Description

The South Catlins Charitable Trust are undertaking plantings to enlarge the potential yellow eyed penguin breeding habitat. With the recent development of the information centre/café, DOC has established a new track through the flax to the steps down to the petrified forest, with tunnels in place under the track so the penguins can come and go undisturbed. A new car park has been built and the old one removed and this area is included in the new planting area. As well as recent plantings, the Trust has purchased the forest remnant opposite and has created a walkway through there, along with some restoration plantings.

Historic involvement

Men of the Trees Southland funded the materials to fence off the forest remnant.

Current involvement

South Catlins Charitable Trust, Department of Conservation, Southland District Council, Fonterra Grassroots Foundation.

2017 September. Restoration plantings undertaken near the new information centre site.
DOC has created tunnels for the yellow eyed penguins to move through underneath the track from the information centre to the steps down to the fossilised forest.
2018 August - working bee to release last spring's plantings. Koromiko have done very well.
Plants amongst the lupin regrowth have done well with the shelter. The lupins were just broken back to let the light in.
2018 August - this year's plantings between the road and the Living Forest. Looking from the walkway entrance towards the sewage treatment plant.
2018 August - looking from the road towards the track entrance.
2018 August - the stream bank was rebattered before the plantings were done. Looking south from the entrance gate.
