Description

Flaxland/wetland restoration with pond creation. Native planting and weed control. Track. QEII covenant.

Aparima Pest Busters, SDC, ES

Ponds were created to improve whitebait spawning grounds. Flax was planted following pond excavation.
Gorse and broom are an ongoing problem with biological control tried, along with physical removal.
Looking west from the start of the track on the upper terrace, hardy cabbage trees are the survivors from planting into strong fescue grass competition. 2006.
The 2004 NZERN trip gets a close encounter with the flax and jointed rush that dominate the wetland.
Bird on nest, by artist Wayne Hill, is an interesting addition to Te Wai Korari.
Clearance of barberry by the Biodiversity Southland weed control project contractors has helped slow the gradual spread of this weed through the flax area and beyond.
A visit by some of the hardy 2012 Landcare Networking Day attendees.
