Description

Creation of ecologically sustainable wetlands/small stream ecosystem complex. Tracks & interpretation.

Current involvement

Waiau Habitat and Enhancement Trust

Shallow ponds offer ideal habitat for wading birds like the pied stilt.
The construction of retention walls to raise water levels was a major part of the restoration work.
The flooding of areas previously weed covered has helped in the control of broom, allowing native species like Carex secta and rushes to survive.
Planting of Carex secta around the water's edge provides good waterfowl cover and food source.
Good tracks and interpretation has been provided by the Waiau Trust.
Tracks are marked by a friendly pukeko.
