Description

We want to see a healthy and thriving native ecosystem in the lower Hollyford Valley, with diverse and abundant bird life free from the risk of predation by possums, stoats and rats. The Hollyford Conservation Trust was formed in June 2014 to establish a ‘mainland island’ sanctuary in the lower Hollyford Valley, in partnership with the Department of Conservation (DOC) and other stakeholders. In practice, this means working hard to: 1. To protect and enhance existing species and communities that have survived in the valley, within self-sustaining populations, similar to what would have existed prior to the arrival of introduced pests/predators to the area; 2. To use best practice pest control operations to create a protected area that allows natural recolonization of native species from adjacent areas; 3. To reintroduce locally extinct native species back to the project area; 4. To facilitate control of weeds, working closely with local Council and the Department of Conservation; 5. To ensure the project remains a community activity that recognizes cultural, social and recreational values.

Current involvement

Fiordland Conservation Trust, DOC

An extensive trapline exists over the project area, using a variety of traps, including the DOC 200's seen here.
As well as trapping, monitoring is undertaken, including bird counts, which shows a steady increase in bird numbers.
Another goal of the FCT is to reintroduce native birds that were there until the last few decades. Releases of the South Island robin have been undertaken and they are hoping to release kiwi in the future.
The Cliff Broad Tawaki pest control project is a trapping line along the rocky coastline to the North of Martins Bay to protect Fiordland crested penguins/tawaki during the breeding season.
