2019 SERN Spring field trip
This year’s annual field trip will focus on threatened plant species, while celebrating 4 restoration sites in Central Southland. Leaving Feldwick Gates at 9.00am, we wil travel to Dunsdale to view work by Rayonier Forests and the Department of Conservation. Lunch will be at the Dunsdale Picnic area, after which we will travel to Sherwood Forest at Tussock Creek. This QEII National Trust covenant area, originally protected by Pat and Derek Turnbull and now owned by Nan and Rod Sinclair, is home to 9 naturally occurring threatened plant species. As well as this several other species have been planted here at the time of a major restoration project in the early 2000’s, and we will be checking these out. Our last stop will be to hear about the restoration work being undertaken by AB Lime at Kings Bend. This involves an area of forest, as well as the enhancement of several wetland areas. We will return to Feldwick Gates by about 5.00pm. The bus trip is free of charge, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Environment Southland. Please bring your own lunch and refreshments and be prepared for wet going underfoot (gumboots preferable).
