Description:
The Southern Wetlands Trust, a registered charitable trust, manages the Big Lagoon Wetlands Education Centre and adjacent wetlands through it's Board of Trustees. The Education Centre and adjacent wetlands are open to the public by arrangement throughout the year. The Southern Wetlands Trust is the first regional affiliate of the National Wetlands Trust of New Zealand. The enhancement of the Big Lagoon wetlands is an ongoing and dynamic effort by trustees and volunteers to improve habitat for over seventy species of marsh and open water birds. Current involvement:
The Southern Wetlands Trust's Board of Trustees manages the Big Lagoon Wetlands and Education Centre.
Historic involvement:
Big Lagoon over a period of some 40 years, had been drained and ditched to a hectare size to provide incresed pasturing for sheep, cattle and domestic deer. It had historically been the second largest fresh water lagoon on the Southern Coastal Plain.
